Anyway, I have added a repository for OO3. And happily using a much better version:

Assuming my application is server only (X is not activated).
Can it performance benefit from changing this setting and re-compile of the kernel?

Try to duplicate fit's mplayer config folder to the new user:
# cp -r /home/fit/.mplayer /home/newuser/

Worked for me ;)
