This may have something to do with upgrading. If I boot 12.04 from a USB drive instead, I get a desktop - however, the entire thing is still tinted yellow.
(Sometimes the tint is red instead - which makes me think it's something to do with timing in the monitor.)

I install 12.04 from usbkey and I had to start boot the install using vga=0x31a to get it works.
Now the system is installed by the resolution is bad (1900x1200 screen), and I can't change it.
It seems the wireless does not work, but I get it work once, when I was booting for the usbkey

i have 12.04 working okay on fit-pc2
* install 12.04 from CD
* boots into black screen
* ctl-alt-F1 to get tty login
* edit /etc/default/grub - change: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet console=tty1 acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux"
* create /etc/pm/config.d/gma500 - add: ADD_PARAMETERS='--quirk-vbemode-restore'
* run update-grub then reboot
screen is still black during boot so can't get into grub but you get the proper GUI login (though screen resolution might not be right - rumour is that the driver does not support big screens e.g. 1920x1080 in my case)
one of my fit-pc2s had *massive* clock drift if running wireless with any of 9.x, 10.x or 11.x (so i disabled wireless) but it seems to be fixed in 12.04

At long last it appears that the gma500 works with kernel 3.5.0-rc1 and 1920x1080 resolution.
I compiled the kernel and removed the video settings from the boot options so it looks like(from /proc):
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.5.0-rc1-070612 root=UUID=6f1135f6-76b3-45f8-8bdc-b0c92d868e41 ro poulsbo.blacklist=yes console=tty1
Glxgears shows:
393 frames in 5.0 seconds = 78.551 FPS
381 frames in 5.0 seconds = 76.121 FPS
378 frames in 5.0 seconds = 75.533 FPS
I do not know if higher resolutions are working.

No, the poulsbo blacklist is left over from previous kernel tests, just to be sure that the stub driver is not loaded.
To get the higher screen resolution you need the 3.5.0-rc1 kernel compiled with the gma500 driver module included.

my standard 12.04 install gives me kernel 3.2.0-24. that means in my case i need to wait until later kernel before my screen resolution will come good

Yes, the standard 12.04 comes with the 3.2.0 kernel, but I doubt the the kernel version is going to change, except for the suffix (-24).
If you want a later kernel, you probably have to wait for a new Ubuntu version (12.10).
It does take 5 -6 hours to compile the kernel on a fit-pc2 with CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=2.

maybe when the 3.5 is released, a deb package will be created by someone
